Jaipuri Razai or Jaipuri Quilt – Why we should consider switching to Jaipuri Quilts?
I come from the state of Rajasthan which is located in northern India. My heart is full of pride and joy when I talk about Rajasthan’s culture, traditions and art and crafts.
Rajasthan is known for its royal palaces, rich traditional arts and crafts. Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and holds a special recognition for its beautiful Jaipuri Quilts.
The quilts are not only representing the richness of heritage and culture, but also very useful as they are eco-friendly alternatives to the present polyester filled and lined quilts.
These eco-friendly quilts reduce carbon emission because they leave no trash behind on the planet as they are made with 100% cotton which is decomposable.
What is a Jaipuri Quilt?
The term Jaipuri Razai/Quilt is used for the cotton quilts (Rajai in Hindi) that are traditionally hand-made in Jaipur by experienced local artisans. Jaipuri Razai’s are famous across the globe for its cosiness, superior comfort and craftmanship of local artisans.
The screen and block prints are used to get aesthetic patterns of royal animals such as camels and elephants, natural prints like paisley, and flowers on the quilt.
Making of Jaipuri Quilts
Unique Jaipur quilts are handmade and hand-stitched which makes them an excellent product for environment lovers. Your one vote for Jaipuri Quilts will make a huge impact on cutting down carbon footprints generated by synthetic fibre filled and fabricated quilts commonly available on the market.
The eco-friendly process of Quilt making is described below:
- 1. Cotton Fabric and Filling:
The first and important step is to choose the finer quality of cotton fabric and filling for the quilts. The superior quality of cotton is used for both filling and layering. The cotton is known for its aesthetic and beneficial properties for the skin and environment because it doesn’t cause skin allergies and it can be decomposed once we are done with the product, which is not the case when you have a polyester quilt.
Polyester takes 500-600 years to decompose and the microfibres generated through the polyester are like the other micro-plastics, that get mixed in the air we breathe and the water we drink. Also it enters into our water resources like seas and rivers and to our land. They account for 85% of man-made trash.
- Block or Screen Printing
After cotton fabric and filling have been chosen, designs are then selected for the quilts and blocks are prepared based on the pattern. The intricate motif blocks are prepared by talented and experienced artisans who have been pursuing the profession for ages.
Once the motifs are ready, next comes the ink artist. He works hard to finalize the colour patterns and chooses the best quality of ink for the printing.
- Cotton Carding
Carding is a mechanical process used to untangle and clean cotton to create a continuous web for the filling in the quilts. The carding process breaks up the locks and unorganized clumps of fibre and also removes the trash from cotton.
The process leaves soft and superior quality of cotton fibres which is used as stuffing in cotton quilts.
- Cotton Layering
Next comes the layering process. This process is used to distribute cotton evenly throughout the cotton quilt.
This part is crucial for divulging tenderness and coziness to the cotton quilt. The cotton covering used for filling cotton is of quality cotton voile. Cotton voile is a lightweight and transparent cotton fabric with silky soft surface.
The last and final stage is stitching which is performed by experienced artisans. They stitch quilts together seamlessly to make the superior quality of quilts, called “Jaipuri Rajai”. This process is also called ‘Tagaai’ in a local language and it is native to the local artisans.
- Eco-friendly Product:
Jaipuri Rajais are made with fine quality of 100% cotton. They are lightweight, cozy, soft, comfortable, breathable, skin-friendly, eco-friendly, handmade alternative to synthetic fibre quilts which cause environmental pollution and are not good for the skin and health.
- Hand Block Printed
Hand block printing is the key feature of Jaipuri Rajai. It is a centuries-old technique used in Rajasthan for printing fine, unique and traditional motifs. Exclusively trained and experienced artisans make the wooden block cut outs and carve interesting designs onto them. Then the blocks are dipped in colour and pressed onto the cloth repeatedly to produce beautiful designs for us.
Jaipuri Razai is commonly reversible for use. So you get two entirely different patterns in the cost of one. Needless to mention that the new quilt is just a flip away!
- Traditional Motifs
The motifs are the soul of Jaipuri Razai and they bring the life to the classic quilts. The vibrant colours and patterns are envisioned to fill your life and home with positivity, festivity and happiness.
Jaipuri Razai /Quilts are washable. Wash your quilt in the washing machine but use a gentle or hand wash cycle. These quilts are made up of fine fibres, delicate materials and are hand stitched so be sure to handle the fabric with care to maintain the stitching.
